October 27 – One Night Only
Revel in 20s-style Jazz and Dance Music!

The Rialto Rhythm Revellers will bring their unique brand of 1920s big-band jazz to the National Arts Centre’s Fourth Stage on Thursday, October 27.  Under the leadership of Leigh Smith, this group has been delighting music lovers in Ottawa and elsewhere with their expert interpretation of authentic period arrangements.

Due to the daunting logistics and economics of live big band music, opportunities to hear the Rialto Rhythm

Revellers have tended to be on sunny outdoor festival stages.  The NAC Fourth Stage outing promises to give listeners a more intimate, convivial and acoustically satisfying experience.

The concert starts at 8 pm, and tickets may be purchased through Ticketmaster , by e-mail at dinny@magma.ca or by calling (613) 829-2507.

Half Notes…

Al Wilkinson reports that the pub below JR’s Restaurant in Almonte is now hosting live jazz on the last Friday of each month. Reeds ‘n Rhythm started things off, and different groups have been sharing the monthly gigs.  Entering Almonte on County Rd. 49, JR’s is on the left just past the first set of traffic lights.

The Mooney’s Bay Bistro is sticking with the ever-popular Bob Misener, Craig Kennedy, Don Paterson group every second Thursday.  Also on the bill is Bob Waite, who appears every Friday and Saturday evening at 6:30. The bistro is located at 731 Ridgewood, right off Riverside.

Pepper, a terrific singer from Tampa, Florida dropped in to the Swan at Carp on August 19 and delighted the audience by sitting in with Peter Turner, Bill Gobby and David Paton.

Her group, Pepper & Fine Thyme, was established in 1994 and has traveled extensively throughout the US & Canada, playing jazz festivals, cruises, concert dates and shows. The group plays every Sunday at Legends in Seminole, Florida.  Thanks to avid fans Gary and Barbara McMillan of Ottawa for bringing Pepper along to the Swan at Carp.

Elaine Ogilvie Memorial Jam Session

Musicians, friends and family joined in a musical tribute to Elaine Ogilvie on Saturday, September 24 at the Bayou Blues and Jazz Club.

The September 24 event at the Bayou featured a open jam session hosted by Peter Turner and the formidable rhythm section of Sol Gunner on bass, drummer Glenn Robb and Norbert Boyce on piano.

The Bandwagon thanks the 15 musicians who sat in during the three-hour session, namely: John Steele, Bob Misener, Neil Sealy, Davina Pearl, David Johnstone, Rick Pearlman, Diana Boland, Heather Walters, Sheila Green, John Graham, Richard Kowalski, Charley Gordon and Bruce, the guitarist whose last name escapes the memory of Bandwagon editors and fact checkers. Special mentions to Elaine’s brother, Johnny Ogilvie of Toronto, who sat in on bass, as well as to 14-year-old Jordan Robb whose drumming continues to improve quickly under the careful tutelage of his grandfather, Glenn.

As reported in the last Bandwagon, Elaine Ogilvie died in June at the age of 49.

Elaine was born in Ottawa in 1956, and the family moved to Vancouver shortly thereafter. It was there that she first developed an interest in music, thanks mainly to her musical brothers – including her brother Brian Ogilvie, the internationally known saxophonist who died in August 2004.  Elaine started on flute, and then moved on to alto sax. When one of her music teachers told her she played the alto like it was a tenor, she switched over to the tenor sax, and never looked back!

In Vancouver, she performed in several bands, most notably the Kitsilano Kat Kickers and the Hi Jivers. After moving to Toronto she did a stint with the Happy Pals with their weekly gig at Grossman’s.

After moving to Ottawa, she performed in a duo with then-husband Brian Stewart, and later with various other Ottawa-area performers. She occasionally jammed at the Bayou, and had recently started teaching the saxophone to young students as well.

Café Paradiso
Webster Brothers in Ottawa – One Night Only!

Ottawa jazz fans are in for a treat on Saturday, October 22 as saxophonist Mike Webster and his brother Gordon Webster on piano take the stage at Café Paradiso on Bank Street near the corner of Gloucester.  Both Websters are currently based in New York City, and are doing a series of one-night quartet/quintet gigs in Kingston, Ottawa and the venerable Rex Hotel in Toronto.

Those who have not been to Café Paradiso lately will be delighted to know that the restaurant now has a well-tuned Yamaha grand piano on its small stage.

Be sure to check out Mike, Gord and their bandmates on October 22!
